Example: Suppose, Sundar gets a cleanliness prize of Rs. 200 at the end of the semester. He can either use the money on himself, or he can use the money on Akash. There are two cases

  • Self interested: The utility doesn’t depend on how much Akash gets.
  • Altruistic: The utility depends on Akash’s spending also. If his friend spends more and feels happy. He feels happy too.

Types of Altruism

  1. Kin Altruism: When you support your family unselfishly.
  2. Reciprocal altruism: Helping others thinking that we will get some sort of return in the future.
  3. Cultural Group altruism: Helping members of the same group you are already part of.
  4. Pure Altruism: Helping someone out of empathy, knowing we won’t get any benefit in the future.
